The engine board, or DC controller, runs the mechanical side of a laser printer: the motors, fuser heater, sensors and paper path, following instructions from the formatter. The high-voltage power supply board alongside it charges the drum, developer and transfer parts. Signs of a fault are motor, fuser or sensor errors that persist after those parts are checked, pages with no image or a grey haze, or a printer that stops mid-way through starting up.
