About this drum unit
The drum, or imaging unit, is the light-sensitive cylinder in a laser printer or copier where the image of each page is formed before the toner moves to the paper. Some printers build the drum into the toner cartridge; others use a separate unit that outlasts several cartridges. A worn or damaged drum shows as spots or lines repeating at the same interval down the page, grey backgrounds, faded areas, or a drum warning on the printer's panel. A scratch on its surface prints as a fine line on every page.
