A transceiver is a pluggable module that turns a switch or adapter port into an optical or copper link. It must match the port's form and speed, the type of fibre and the distance to be covered, and the module at the other end of the link. Many switches check the coding in a module and warn about, or refuse, modules they do not recognise. Signs of a problem are a link that will not come up, an unsupported-module warning, rising errors, or a link that drops as the module warms up.
