A fingerprint reader lets a person sign in to a computer with a finger instead of a password. In laptops it is a small module, often built into the power button or the palm rest, connected by a short cable; external readers plug into a USB port. Signs of a fault are a reader the system no longer detects, enrolment that fails, fingers that are not recognised after cleaning, or a cracked sensor surface.
