About this drum unit
A drum unit, sometimes called an imaging unit, is the light-sensitive cylinder inside a laser printer or copier that holds the page image before the toner transfers onto the paper. On some machines the drum is built into the toner cartridge, while on others it is a separate part that lasts through several cartridges. When it wears or becomes damaged, you may see marks or lines repeating at a fixed spacing down the page, grey shading across the background, pale or faded patches, or a drum warning on the control panel. A surface scratch prints as a thin line on every page.
