About this processor
A processor, also called a CPU, is the chip that executes the instructions of every program a computer runs. It has to suit the socket on the system board, and the board's chipset and firmware must also support it, since a board may take only certain processor families or need a firmware update first. Processors seldom fail by themselves; a dead machine more often points to the board, memory or power supply. When the processor is at fault, expect no start-up, fans at full speed with a blank screen, shutdowns from overheating, or hardware errors in the system log.
