About this CMOS battery
The CMOS battery, or real-time clock battery, is a small coin cell that keeps a computer's clock and firmware settings when the machine is unplugged and its main battery is flat. In laptops it often comes with a short cable and plug, wrapped in a sleeve. As it runs down, the clock resets to a default date, firmware settings are lost, and the machine may show a clock or checksum error at start-up, or need a key press before it will continue.
