A drive backplane is the circuit board at the back of a server or storage drive cage. Hot-plug drives slide in and connect to it, and it links them to the storage controller and carries their power and status lights. Some are sold already fitted to the cage. Signs of a failing backplane are several drives in the same cage dropping out together, a drive bay that no drive works in, fault lights that do not match the drives' real state, or a backplane the system reports as missing.
