A thermal printhead is the strip of small heating elements inside a label, receipt or barcode printer that builds the printed image. It works either by darkening heat-sensitive paper or by transferring ink from a ribbon onto plain paper. Heads vary by printer model and by print resolution, so the replacement must match both. The element surface wears down through normal use and is harmed by dirt, adhesive build-up and scratches. Warning signs include white lines along the print, faint or patchy output, barcodes that fail to scan, or a head error reported by the printer.
