An AC adaptor converts mains electricity into the low-voltage direct current a laptop, monitor or other device runs on, and charges the battery of a device that has one. Three things must match the device: the connector tip, the output voltage, and a power rating at least as high as the device needs. Many laptops identify the adaptor through its tip, and warn about or refuse to charge from one they do not recognise or one that is too weak. Signs of a failing adaptor are no charging light, charging that starts and stops, a hot or buzzing brick, or a damaged cable.
