A projector lamp is the bulb that produces the light a projector throws onto the screen, and it sits in a housing that slides into a bay inside the machine. Most projectors track how long the lamp has been lit. Brightness falls slowly over its working life, and colours often shift towards yellow or green as it wears out. Typical end-of-life signs are a warning light, an on-screen message asking for a replacement, shutdown shortly after start-up, or a lamp that fails to light. It can also stop working without warning, sometimes with an audible pop.
