About this transceiver
A transceiver is a small plug-in module that lets a port on a switch or network adapter carry data over optical fibre or copper cable. It has to suit the shape and data rate of the port, the kind of fibre being run, the length of the link, and the module fitted at the far end. Many switches read the identity coded into a module and will flag or reject one they do not recognise. Typical signs of trouble are a link that refuses to establish, a warning about an unsupported module, growing error counts, or a connection that fails once the module heats up.
