A RAID cache module adds fast memory to a storage controller so that write data can be held briefly, and its battery or capacitor keeps that memory safe if the power fails. When the cache stops working, most controllers switch to slower write-through mode instead. The battery or capacitor wears down over time, and heat shortens its life. Typical signs of trouble are a cache or battery warning at start-up or in the management software, write caching turning itself off, or a battery that never reaches full charge.
