On many laptops the processor, and sometimes the graphics chip and memory, are soldered directly to it, so its specification fixes theirs. Failure can show as no power, power without start-up or display, ports or devices that stop responding, or liquid damage. Some boards hold the machine's serial number and model details, which may need programming after fitting.

Can I fit a faster processor on my motherboard?
Only if the board's socket and chipset support it. In most laptops the processor is soldered to the board, so it comes with the board. In a desktop or a server, check the board maker's list of supported processors before you order.
