About this display panel
A display panel is the screen that produces the picture, and in most modern designs it also carries the LED backlight that lights that picture. For a laptop, the replacement has to agree with the machine on size, resolution, connector type, mounting points and surface finish, and a touch version is not interchangeable with a non-touch one. A failing panel shows lines or patches of colour, dead pixels, flicker, an image that is very dim or dark, or cracked glass. When an external monitor displays normally while the built-in screen does not, the panel or its cable is at fault.

How do I find the right screen for my laptop?
