About this drive backplane
A drive backplane is the circuit board fixed at the rear of a server or storage drive cage, linking hot-plug drives to the storage controller while supplying their power and status lights. Drives slide in and mate with it directly. Some are supplied already mounted in the cage. Failure signs include several drives in one cage dropping out at once, a bay where no drive works, fault lights that disagree with the drives' true condition, or the system reporting the backplane as absent.
