About this thermal compound
Thermal compound is a heat-conducting layer that sits between a chip and its heatsink, carrying warmth away instead of leaving insulating air trapped in microscopic gaps. It comes as paste for processors and graphics chips, or as pads of fixed thickness for memory, power parts and chipsets. The material can dry out, shift or break contact once a heatsink is lifted, so it should be replaced after every removal. Worn or missing compound shows as rising temperatures, constant fan noise and shutdowns under load.
