Each drive generation works with its own cartridges and can normally read those from earlier generations, though not from later ones. Some drives sit inside a server bay; others are external units in their own housing, and either way the storage interface must suit the server's controller. Warning signs include frequent demands for a cleaning cartridge, read or write failures, cartridges that refuse to load or eject, and the backup software failing to detect the drive.
