About this CMOS battery
A CMOS battery is a small coin cell that keeps the clock and firmware settings when power is removed. It matters when the computer is unplugged or the main battery is flat. Laptop versions are often sleeved with a short lead and connector; other boards take a bare cell in a holder. Match cell type, lead and plug before fitting. When weak, the date falls back to a default and settings vanish. Start-up can halt with a clock or checksum warning until a key is pressed.
