A document feeder, also called an ADF, draws a pile of originals through one sheet at a time so the scanner in a copier or multifunction printer can read each page. Duplexing versions also capture the reverse side, either by turning each sheet over or by scanning both faces as it passes. The complete unit covers the feed rollers, separation pad, sensors and hinges, and it must suit the exact machine it sits on. Wear or failure shows up as paper jams, multiple pages pulling through together, crooked or distorted scans, streaks appearing on copies, or pages going unrecognised by the feeder.
