A heatsink is a metal assembly that pulls heat away from a processor or graphics chip and releases it into the air. A base plate sits against the chip, and sealed heat pipes often carry the warmth to fins, where a fan or the system's airflow disperses it. In many laptops the heatsink, pipes and fan form a single thermal module, so the whole unit must suit the machine. Warning signs of a blocked, damaged or badly seated heatsink include overheating, noisy fans, the machine slowing under load, or sudden shutdowns. A bent or dented heat pipe can lose most of its cooling ability.
