A host bus adapter links a server to external drives or a storage network, carrying traffic over Fibre Channel, SAS or SCSI. Rather than grouping disks into arrays as a RAID controller would, it hands each drive or volume directly to the host. Models vary by interface, data rate, port count and bracket height, and some are mezzanine cards made for blade servers. Trouble shows as links that refuse to come up, storage paths that drop or flap, or a card the server stops recognising.
