A network module is a plug-in card that gives a modular switch or router extra ports or capabilities. In a chassis switch these take the form of line cards and supervisor cards; a fixed switch accepts uplink or stacking modules; a branch router takes interface, voice or service modules. Each one is built for a specific chassis family and slot type, so they are not interchangeable.
