About this AC adaptor

An AC adaptor takes power from the mains and turns it into the low-voltage direct current that a laptop, monitor or similar device needs to run and to charge its battery. The connector tip and the output voltage must suit the device, and the power rating must meet or exceed what the device draws. Many laptops check the adaptor through the tip and may warn or refuse to charge if they do not recognise it or it is too weak. Warning signs include no charging light, charging that cuts in and out, a brick that runs hot or buzzes, and a worn or damaged cable.

How to choose a replacement AC adaptor

Is this the right part?

Find the part number and output rating on the label fixed to the brick. Match the voltage and power figures against your device's requirements, usually printed near the power socket or underneath it, and check the tip shape before connecting. The manufacturer's part number for this listing is F9FR7.

Not sure? Send us the number from the label, or your machine's serial number, and we will confirm the match before you order.

Questions buyers ask about AC adaptors

How do I know which AC adaptor my laptop needs?

Read the label on the adaptor you are replacing, or on the underside of the laptop, and match three things: the output voltage, the wattage and the plug, which may be a round barrel tip or USB-C. The adaptor's own part number is the surest match, so search for it at the top of this page.

Can I use an adaptor with a higher wattage than my old one?

Usually yes, if the voltage and the plug are the same: a laptop draws only the power it needs. An adaptor with a lower wattage than the one the laptop came with may charge it slowly, or not at all while it is in use. Some brands also identify the adaptor through the plug's centre pin, so match the part number where you can.

Will a USB-C charger work with my laptop?

Only if the laptop charges through USB-C: look for a charging symbol beside the port, or check the laptop's specifications. The charger must also supply at least the wattage of the laptop's own adaptor, or it may not keep up while the laptop is in use.
