About this scanner assembly
A scanner assembly is the complete flatbed unit fitted to the top of a multifunction printer, containing the glass platen, the moving carriage with its sensor or lamp, the drive motor and the lid hinges, all supplied as one unit. It reads the page placed on the glass to produce copies, scans and faxes. Fitment varies by printer model, and some versions include the document feeder while others do not. Typical signs of failure are lines or streaks appearing on copies but not on printed pages, an error when the machine starts, a carriage that grinds or stays still, and scans that come out blank or very dark.
